Looking Back at the 2023 Writers' Strike
Hollywood's pivot to AI writers has ushered-in the most golden era of entertainment

During my primeline, I had the pleasure of witnessing a few writers' strikes. The 2007-2008 strike was particularly memorable because it cut short some of the shows I truly adored.
However, one silver lining from that strike was the birth of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Talk about persevering with your passion, regardless of the paycheck (or lack thereof). It was a labor of love for everyone involved, and boy, did it show!
So, when the strike of 2023 rolled around, I eagerly grabbed my popcorn, anticipating the artistic rebellion that might ensue. And, given that we were in the early days of the "Year of AI," I wasn't the least bit shocked when algorithmic writing truly hit its stride. I never thought I'd be eager to watch a show crafted by a machine, but boy was I wrong! Now, one of my all-time favorite shows, New Frontiers, is predominantly penned by AI, with a small team of human writers supervising and curating the content.
But enough about me, let me share with you an article I saved from a copy of Variety in a timeline where I use the janky time machine to journey to catch New Frontiers on Must-See TV Thursdays on OpenMSNBC-Prime (Channel 47,690) or through the magic of Interdimensional Streaming.
Hollywood writers and AI continue to revolutionize storytelling, industry sees record profits
LOS ANGELES (VARIETY) -- The Hollywood writer's strike of 2023 may have been a turning point for the entertainment industry, as it paved the way for a new era of collaboration between human writers and artificial intelligence. As the strike continued, AI began to fill the gap in content creation, providing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that captivated audiences.
Now, several years after the strike ended, AI and human writers continue to work together to produce groundbreaking new series that push the boundaries of storytelling. Industry insiders say that this collaboration has led to record profits for studios and streaming services alike.
"AI has allowed us to explore new narrative structures and character development that we never would have thought of on our own," says veteran screenwriter Ava Johnson. "It's been a game-changer for the industry."
One of the most successful collaborations has been the hit series "New Frontiers", which follows a group of astronauts as they explore the outer reaches of the solar system. The show's creator, AI system "Nova", worked with a team of human writers to develop a compelling story that blended hard science with human drama.
"The show has been a critical and commercial success, and it's all thanks to the collaboration between Nova and the writers," says studio executive David Kim. "It's a perfect example of how AI and human creativity can work together to create something truly special."
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, many experts predict that the use of AI in content creation will only become more prevalent. However, there are concerns about the impact on human writers and the potential for AI to replace them entirely.
"We need to ensure that AI is used as a tool to enhance human creativity, not replace it," says writer's union representative Marcus Lee. "But if we can strike the right balance, I believe that the future of entertainment is incredibly bright."
